Restrictions on the transportation of certain goods across the border

The Tax and Customs Board (MTA) conducts full customs control at the Narva and Luhamaa border crossings.

For a traveller crossing the border on foot, full customs control means the inspection and examination of the traveller and the luggage he or she carries.
At the moment, there are restrictions on the transportation of certain goods across the border.

Prohibited goods from the EU to Russia:

 • Animal products (cheese, butter, dairy products, sausages, jamon, basturma, cured and smoked meat, processed beef, pork, lamb and other meat products) due to the threat of spreading foot-and-mouth disease.

• It is forbidden to take out cash, except for personal use.  It is possible to carry currency for which there are no restrictions, including Russian rubles.

According to the explanations of the Estonian Tax and Customs Board, the euro is not a means of payment in Russia, so there is no need to bring cash in euros.

• It is prohibited to import live plants and goods worth more than 300 euros (luxury goods).

Prohibited goods from Russia to the EU:

 • Alcohol with a strength above 22%, tobacco products, household appliances and other goods are prohibited.

The full list of restrictions is available on the websites of the Estonian and Russian customs authorities:
